SilverBackTrails
Running & Walking
Over the beautiful
North York Moors
Let us help you...
SilverBackTrails came into being in the middle of 2020 with one aim to get people out running and walking over the North Yorkshire Moors and beyond. we started off with our Wednesday Wanders, meeting at a different location for a run of about 6 miles. As much as the running Wednesdays are about the history of the moors, and "runsploring" all its nooks and crannies. And of course, having a natter and a brew of some sort at the end...
Now over five years on we are still wandering and finding new stuff to look at.
As well as Wandering we decided we wanted to build on this with some no-nonsense back-to-basic events and training.
Having completed many events of various distances from 10k to 450 miles, including UTMB, The Tunnel 200, HM 200 the inaugural National 3 Peaks Ultra, circa 450 miles, Cymru Lon las 253 and Line 300 I wanted to get back to basics and let people enjoy their running with easy-to-enter events without all the bells and whistles... Hopefully, this is being achieved with our Revenge Series and Goathland V Trigs.
We also offer basic map sessions that should appeal to complete beginners and those who have forgotten previous learning.
New for this year, we will be providing personal mentoring and coaching for trail runners and ultra-distance runners.
If you live within easy reach of the North Yorkshire Moors then this may be for you.
Get in touch with us via the website to have a no-obligation discussion about your training needs and running aspirations.
From beginners to leathery campaigners and anyone else in between...
Hills, hard work and sweat are guaranteed...
Adrian, SilverBackTrails.

Summits of the North York Moors Ultra 2026
Back for the second year, Summits of the North York Moors Ultra is a foot race over a circular route of around 120 miles, taking in the 10 highest hills within the North York Moors National Park. The route passes ancient burial sites, medieval boundary stones, ancient crosses and Bronze Age earthworks. You will follow portions of the Cleveland Way, Esk Valley Walk and Lyke Wake Walk long distance paths. Your journey will be one filled with expansive views in all directions, over clearly defined tracks and trods that will keep you trotting as you ascend and descend the hills of the North York Moors, your constant companions from the first to the last mile.
You will become immersed in a landscape that still be familiar to our ancestors from as far back as the Stone Age, you will run over ancient trods and tracks that have been used by Bronze Age tribes, Celts, Viking raiders, medieval Lady's knights and priests.
You will pass burial mounds and ancient crosses all symbolising the constant habitation of this moorland landscape, which was formed millions of years ago, before being sculpted into its present form by glacial activity 30,000 years ago.
Take a journey through time on an unforgettable 120 mile run that will bring you highs, lows, breathtaking views and memories that will last a lifetime as you push yourself beyond the comfort zone...
There will be a warm SilverBackTrails welcome at all the checkpoint locations for each participant, regardless of whether it is your first or hundredth 100 miler.
Circa 120 miles and 16,000 ft of elevation. Over one of the most beautiful, and ancient landscapes the United Kingdom has to offer. Full details and entry via Si Entries on the events section of the website.

New for 2026 there will be two distances to choose from, Lamplighter 20 and 40.

The Lamplighter is back for 2026 with bonus miles and a shorter sibling.
Run from sunset to sunrise across the magnificent North York Moors. Choose either a 40 mile or 20 mile route.
Lamplighter Sunset to Sunrise night trail runs
Starting and finishing at Goathland Village Hall you will visit Triangulation Pillars and other checkpoint locations before heading back to Goathland Village Hall. There will be refreshments, water fizzy pop and snacks at two locations on the course.
There will also be one indoor CP in between. The courses will have some marker flags around the courses, each entrant will have the routeGPX and a tracker to aid with navigation.
The start and finish will be dictated by the Sundown and Sunup times for that day, 20/21June. As it is the shortest night it will be a true run through the night, dusk till dawn.
Come and run from sunset to sunrise and add your stories to the Lamplighter Legend...
Entrants will register and collect numbers etc an hour before last light , both events will begin when the Lamplighter appears to illuminate the streetlamp situated outside of the village hall, it will be up to you to be ready to go…
You will then have either 12 or 6.5 hours to get back Goathland Village hall .
All finishers will receive a rather nice Lamplighter medal .
Memento to the first female and first male finishers.
